Tonight: Step Into the Vault with Refuge of Meaning

Refuge of Meaning Premieres Tonight!

What A Space Can Teach Us About Its Own Story

Greetings,

The day is finally here! Refuge of Meaning premiere's tonight at 7pm at the Diefenbunker Cold War Museum. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Haven't grabbed your ticket yet and still would like to join us?

Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson and I have had the pleasure of having access to the museum's archives in preparation for this work. Knowing that this piece was going to be performed in the vault guided a lot of my musical choices as a composer:

What to Expect From Refuge of Meaning:

Lessons Learned 75 Feet Underground

Premiering this piece in the Vault, it is a very sonically live space. Taking this into account, I made the decision to create this piece for solo viola instead of viola and looper.

Making this shift has left room for more movement and interaction between Elizabeth and myself, and for me to create melodies that play with the resonants of the space.

Refuge of Meaning: A Work that Shines A Light on Important History Fostering Contemplation For the Hear and Now

For better or worse, history tends to be cyclical. Refuge of Meaning is a piece that showcases many themes that we continue to wrestle with as a society: listening and holding space for the land and it's original stewards and owners, national security, and ways we can take care of one another.

From our ensemble attire, to our creative process--we are so excited to share more about what we have learnt and created from this process.

We hope you can join us for the premiere and artist-talk for this special work!

Thank you so much for holding space for my music in your ears and my notes in your inbox--it truly means the world to me!

Until next time,

Warmly,

KP
